Data Retrieval

Click on one of the geographical categories to go to a page and search for data organized at the corresponding level of aggregation. Under the State page is a set of themes that correspond closely with the Federal Geographic Data Committee framework themes. Search here to find data organized by topic. The Super Regional page lists sites that contain data extending beyond Oregon's border to neighboring states. The Regional page contains sources that have data covering particular areas of Oregon. The County and City provide links to those administrative units that have spatial data online for their jurisdictions.

Alphabetical Listing

An alternative approach to searching is to go directly to an alphabetical listing of data from all catagories organized by dataset name. There is also an alphabetical listing of all data organized by the name of the data source. This may be faster if you already have a data supplier in mind.

Another Option

Browse these catalogue sites, which contain catalogues of geographic data from a variety of sources. While the sites may not contain any spatial data themselves, some have map or text-based search mechanisms, and will lead you to different data sources, as well as many of the ones listed here.

Full Text Search

Enter keywords in a Search box to perform a search of the text on that Web page. This can be useful to quickly check for a specific type of data or application or location.

***Key Concept***

No links on this site will cause data to start streaming toward your computer! The links under "Data Source" in the data tables lead to the GIS or data page of the provider, but do not initiate data downloading. In the design of this site three reasons were considered for directing the user to the data source's page before downloading.

1) There is often information at the source that is critical to obtaining and using the data.

2) There may be restrictions or conditions on using the data that must be enforced.

3) The user may find other useful information, such as details of the origins of the data or tools that can be used with the data.

In most cases one can download the data in one or two mouse clicks after selecting the Data Source link, but some sites require users to register or acknowledge a disclaimer before obtaining data.
